What to expect in the car recycling industry in 2024

As the demand for green parts increases and awareness of environmental action is on the rise, companies in the automotive and vehicle recycling industry are doing their utmost to keep up.

This year, the automotive industry saw the number of electric vehicles purchased continue to rise, along with other trends including rising demand for green parts, increased use of recycled materials, and general awareness of sustainability.

But what can we expect to see within the next few years? Here are some key things to note.

Sustainability and environmental awareness

With growing global concern over climate change, automakers are increasingly urged to adopt eco-friendly practices throughout the entire vehicle life cycle. From the production phase, where manufacturers are exploring sustainable materials and energy-efficient processes, to the vehicles end-of-life stage, where recycling and responsible disposal are prioritised, the industry is undergoing a huge shift.

For example, the BMW Group is making changes to its tyres in 2024. They will be using cast aluminium wheels produced with 100-percent green power for their BMW and MINI brands from 2024 onwards. This change will save up to an incredible 500,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.

Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Joachim Post, says “Green power is one of the biggest levers for reducing CO2 emissions in our supply chain. We have already signed more than 400 contracts with our suppliers, including suppliers of wheels and aluminium, requiring them to use green power.”

Overton Automotive’s sustainability vision

As one of the leading vehicle recyclers in the UK, Overton Automotive are making big changes to reach the goal of reducing 42% of emissions by 2030.

This all aligns with the e2e‘s Sustain 360 programme in aiming towards the vision of Net Zero by 2050 for its network members.

By implementing short and long-term goals, we’re pleased to be well under way with the reduction of our Scope 1 and 2 emissions.

Overton’s environmentally-friendly actions for the next 2 years:

  • More efficient use of power sources and powered equipment. For example, LED Lights and timer switches
  • Improving our building EPC grading
  • Upgrading our collection vehicles
  • Feasibility studies on all our plant and equipment with the view to planning to being at least 80% electric by 2030
  • Improving our recycling rates and monitoring % of particular products we recycle from ELV’S

Overton’s environmentally-friendly actions for the next 6 years:

  • Alternative power sources like solar or wind to power all or part of our buildings
  • Upgrading of plant and equipment to be powered by electricity rather than diesel or gas.

“ Sustainability has been the “Buzz” word this year in our industry. Despite recycling tons of material each year for many years and contributing already to a “greener” planet, we are also now fully engaged in a Carbon Emission reduction programme and collectively we are looking forward to contributing to a cleaner environment. We have already made great steps in 2023 by achieving ISO14001 and our first Science Based Targets give us a firm foundation to improve further in 2024,
says Mark Boden (Overton Automotive’s Business & Project Manager).

Green parts demand

As environmental awareness grows, so does the demand for recycled and remanufactured vehicle parts.

Green parts contribute significantly to reducing the environmental impact of the automotive sector. As well as their eco-friendly appeal, these parts often come at a more affordable price point compared to brand-new components, aligning with a broader consumer trend toward budget-conscious and sustainable choices.

Vehicle green parts undergo rigorous testing, cleaning and refurbishment at Overton Automotive to ensure they meet the highest quality standards. So our customers can always expect the very best.

However, it isn’t only consumers who are reaping the benefits of green parts. The automotive industry is now seeing an increase in repair shops utilising green parts. This comes with the increasing recognition of the quality and cost-effectiveness of green parts. According to Activate Accident Repair, green parts are mainly used for cosmetic repairs, such as replacing doors, wing mirrors, or bumpers.

With the growing use of green parts now in repair centres, we’re certain the demand for them won’t be slowing down any time soon.

Electric vehicle recycling

With the news that we will no longer be able to purchase petrol or diesel cars from 2030, there has been a huge surge in the purchase of electric vehicles (EVs).

EVs are an excellent environmentally friendly alternative. Although, it can’t be ignored that the manufacturing and disposal of their batteries can have a significant impact on our environment.

Power supply connected to electric vehicle charge battery. EV charging station for electric car or Plug-in hybrid car. Automotive innovation and technology concepts.

The average EV battery has a lifespan of an average of 100,000 miles (about 8 years). So it’s inevitable that once these miles are up, each EV owner will have to replace their battery.

It’s imperative that EV batteries do not end up in landfill, as they can release extremely harmful toxins to the environment. Instead, it’s always best to dispose of batteries carefully or, even better, have them completely recycled.

Auto recyclers will need to dispose of these batteries safely. Recyclers have two main methods of extracting valuable metals from the battery:

Pyrometallurgy – This is the more common method which involves mechanically shredding the cell and then burning it, leaving recyclers with different types of plastic, metals, and glues. At that point, they can use several methods to extract the metals, including further burning.

Hydrometallurgy – Instead of burning the battery parts, this method involves dipping the battery materials into acid, which produces a pool of liquid metal.

The auto recycling industry will certainly see an increase in EV battery recycling in 2024 and the years to come.

As we step into 2024, Overton Automotive remains committed to leading the charge in eco-friendly auto recycling. With sustainability at the forefront of everyone’s minds, there are certainly going to be some big changes in the automotive industry as a whole, as well as the rising demand for green parts and increased number of electric vehicles needing to be recycled.

Things to check when buying a used car

Are you thinking about buying a used car? Buying a pre-owned vehicle can be a great way to save money and find a reliable set of wheels. Although it’s always worth checking over it thoroughly before purchasing.

To help make you aware of what to look out for, we’ve compiled a list of 10 important things to check before sealing the deal. From assessing the vehicle’s history to inspecting its mechanical components, these key takeaways should help you to decide whether the vehicle you’re looking at is worth buying or not.

If you’re considering buying a used vehicle, check out the benefits of purchasing a vehicle from an auction.

10 things to check when buying a used car

1. Check Vehicle History

It’s always worth knowing about the vehicle’s history, so make sure to ask the dealer for a history report. Here, you’ll learn about any past accidents, ownership history, and any potential red flags.

For example, if you’re looking at ownership history you will be able to see who owned the vehicle and when they owned it. If the car has had multiple owners over a short space of time, you might have some questions as to why this is.

It’s easy to check a vehicle’s history report, get a free one here

Checking the accidents and damage report also gives a good indication into the condition of the vehicle. This information is always useful to understand the extent of previous repairs and any potential underlying issues that may cost you in the future.

2. The Bodywork

Checking a vehicle’s bodywork can give you a good indication of any previous damage. Make sure to carefully examine the car’s exterior for signs of rust, dents, or scratches.

You shouldn’t worry much about minor scratches and dents as these can easily be repaired and won’t break your bank. It’s the larger dents and rusting that might be more costly if you decide to get these repaired later down the line.

Top Tip: It’s also worth noting that you should inspect the vehicle during a clear, bright day to ensure you don’t miss anything.

3. Tyres

Another thing to check when buying a used vehicle is the tyres. The legal minimum tread depth for a car is 1.6mm to guarantee safety on the road. So if you’re looking at a used car with a tread depth below 3mm, you’ll want to factor in the fact that you’ll need to change the tyres soon.

You should also consider changing the tyres if they’re underinflated, overinflated or the wrong tyres for your vehicle. These factors can be detrimental to wasting fuel and can be costly, especially if multiple tyres need to be replaced at once.

4. Engine

Checking the engine is crucial when looking at the condition and overall performance of a vehicle.

Make sure the engine has cooled down, then lift the hood of the vehicle. You’ll want to inspect for any leaks or damage to avoid any future costs. Oil leaks, coolant leaks, or visible damages to components such as hoses or belts can indicate potential problems.

Take a look at how to check the engine when buying a used car.

It’s also a good idea to listen out for any unusual noises coming from the engine. If you notice any abnormal sounds or vibrations, there could be an issue with the engine’s components or internal mechanisms.

5. Fluid Levels and Leaking

Next on the list is checking the fluid levels under the bonnet. Fluids to check include oil, brake and power steering. If the level is low, it might be a sign that it’s been neglected and has had poor maintenance in the past.

This is also a good opportunity to look for any potential leaks, not just under the bonnet but also where the car has been sitting. Vehicle leaks could be due to various reasons. If you notice a brown liquid where the car has been sitting, it could be the sign of a petrol or diesel leak

Alternatively, if you see red fluid this usually indicates a leak of transmission fluid. These leaks can happen for a number of reasons, from broken seals and cracked fluid lines to failing gaskets and general wear and tear. The issue should be looked at as soon as possible and we’d advise avoiding purchasing any used car that shows these signs of leaking.

6. Electrical Components

Checking a vehicle’s electrical components is a simple thing to do, yet can easily be forgotten. So be sure to test all electrical features in the vehicle, including lights, windows opening/closing normally, air conditioning, and audio system, to ensure they’re all working properly.

If you find anything needs replacing, you don’t always have to splash the cash on brand new parts. Instead, consider purchasing green parts.

Top Tip: It’s also sensible to check you have all the correct keys before purchasing a used car. Check the vehicle’s handbook to see which keys were provided when the car was new, as modern keys are expensive to replace.

7. Mileage

Mileage plays a significant role in determining the value and pricing of a used car. Generally, lower mileage vehicles tend to have higher resale value, as they are perceived to have more life left in them.

So make sure to check the odometer reading to ensure it aligns with the age and condition of the car. If it seems too low or too high, there might be a cause for concern.

8. Test Drive

This seems like an obvious point to make, but taking the vehicle out for a test drive is probably the best thing to do when checking out any car you’re thinking of buying (whether it’s brand new or pre-loved).

When taking the car for a test drive, make sure you’re paying attention to things like engine performance, braking, suspension, and overall handling. This should give you a good sense of how the vehicle drives, and if it’s right for you.

Young man testing new car before buying

9. Windscreen

Another vehicle check to make is the glass on the windscreen. Are there any chips? If so, they could turn into cracks.

A small crack in the windscreen can quickly spread and worsen, especially due to temperature changes or vibrations from driving. This can lead to a larger, more expensive repair or the need for a complete windscreen replacement.

If there’s a crack in the driver’s eye line on the windscreen, it can also lead to a failed MOT test which is always costly.

10. Safety Checks

Lastly but certainly not one to ignore is checking all the safety aspects of the vehicle.

Here are some things to remember:

  • Ensure seatbelts work and are in good condition
  • Check all the lights and windscreen wipers are working
  • If an airbag is fitted, check warning lights work as they should

Your safety while driving is the most important thing, so it’s important not to skip these safety checks.

Although buying a preloved vehicle can be a lot cheaper than buying brand new, it’s always worth carrying out as thorough checks as possible to save you from spending a fortune in the future. Don’t hesitate to ask questions and seek professional advice to ensure you’re getting a reliable vehicle that suits your needs.

A complete guide on how to scrap a car

A question we get asked regularly is ‘how to scrap a car’. If you’re looking to scrap your vehicle, then you’ll want to do it properly.

Scrapping a car properly means you’re saving the environment from being contaminated with hazardous components like oils, batteries, and coolants.

It also allows for the recycling of valuable materials like metals and plastics, conserving natural resources and reducing the need for manufacturing brand new materials.

These are just a couple of reasons why it’s important to scrap your end-of-life vehicle at an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF).

Scrapping a vehicle isn’t necessarily difficult. Although there’s a lot of information people aren’t aware of. So, we’re here to run you through the process and answer your questions.

Reasons to scrap a car

The first thing you need to consider is knowing when your car has reached the end of its life.

If you’re not sure if your car needs to be scrapped or not, let’s take a look at some of the most common reasons people might scrap a car.

scrap car breakdown

1. It’s expensive to run

If you find yourself forking out for regular repairs, MOT fails and breakdowns, then now might be the time to scrap your car.

2. It’s been written off

If your car has been involved in an accident and is beyond repair, you’ll need to write it off. If that’s the case, then scrapping it is probably the best option. At least you can claim some more for scrapping it and know that the materials will be recycled.

3. Your car’s wasting fuel

Sometimes older cars can waste more fuel. If you find yourself taking more frequent trips to the petrol station, it might be time to say ‘goodbye’.

Newer cars are often more petrol efficient and are better for the environment.

4. You want to get rid of it easily

If you’re looking for a hassle-free way of getting rid of your car, then it might be easier to let the experts do their thing.

An ATF will collect your car and take it back to their centre for it to be recycled. It definitely takes any stress and hassle away compared to trying to sell it yourself and dealing with unreliable people.

5. You need the money

Sometimes there isn’t much more to it other than you need some cash! So if this sounds like you, then scrapping your car is a quick way of making some money. It can be an easier and quicker process to scrap it compared to trying to sell it.

A step-by-step guide on how to scrap my car

So, now you know why you might want to scrap your car. The next question is, how do you scrap a car?

At Overton Automotive, we’re a licensed ATF so are fully equipped and experienced when it comes to recycling vehicles.

Let’s go through the process on how to scrap your vehicle.

From classroom to career: supporting young people in education

At Overton Automotive, we’re proud to support young people in education. Whether they’re keen to pursue a career in the automotive industry or aren’t quite sure what they want to do yet, we believe in giving people from all backgrounds a chance.

That’s why we’re delighted to shine a spotlight on our latest apprentice and work experience employees.

QA Scotland Modern Apprenticeships

QA has been Scotland’s leading provider for digital apprenticeships for over ten years now. At Overton Automotive, we’ve now supported and guided four members of staff through a qualification in partnership with QA Scotland.

Our latest employee, who we’re delighted to have supported through her apprenticeship, is 17-year-old Patrijia. She has been with us since August 2022 and, despite her QA course being a year long, she managed to complete this in just 10 months.

Patrijia at Overton Automotive

Patrijia is now an official employee at Overton Automotive as a sales advisor on our front counter. Her job is to serve members of the public and trade customers, which she does brilliantly. The QA course helped her greatly with her skills, particularly in customer service. Through her training she should have been paid an apprentice wage, however as a national living wage employer, we ensured she was paid above and beyond the legal wage for an apprentice.

The support from QA was extremely beneficial to Patrijia, as the apprentice students are still children when they start with us (just 16 years old). It became clear how important it is to support these young adults not only in the workplace, but also emotionally and in their personal lives too.

Supporting Work-Experience Students

At Overton Automotive, we’re also so proud to be supporting students in school through work experience opportunities on a long-term basis.

Thanks to Aberdeen Council, we’ve been given the opportunity to support students in their final 2 years at school. The council has recognised that not all children thrive in a school environment. So to keep them engaged and in education, they’ve created an opportunity for pupils to work two days a week all year round for their final two years at school.

This wonderful opportunity prevents children leaving school with little to no qualifications and prepares them for full time employment. It’s a great way to ensure the students are playing a positive part in society, instead of being absent from school.

Our latest work-experience employee, Liam, is a pleasure to have on board. Some of his duties include picking and locating parts, preparation of parts, data entry, stock control, and cleaning. He loves getting stuck in!

Liam has also been trained in health and safety in the workplace, safe systems of work, and fire procedures. We’re so pleased we are able to give him an insight into the working world and experience of employment while he’s still in education.

What are the benefits of car recycling?

As we work towards building a greener world, finding sustainable solutions is imperative. In the automotive industry, we’ve seen a huge surge in car recycling in recent years as more people are beginning to recognise the environmental and economic benefits it has to offer.

According to Climate.gov, our activities involving burning fossil fuels and clearing forests adds about 11 billion metric tons of carbon to the atmosphere each year. With statistics like this and growing concerns about climate change, there has been a significant change in the automotive industry. Fortunately, we’ve seen a positive increase in car recycling and a rising demand for recycled car parts.

But what exactly do the benefits of car recycling and buying green parts mean to you? Let’s take a look at the positive impact it has on the environment, your wallet, and the overall sustainability of the automotive industry.

Environmental Impact

Did you know that when new car parts are manufactured, it puts a huge strain on the environment? This is because the manufacturing process and extraction of raw materials requires energy from fossil fuels and electricity, which results in greenhouse gas emissions.

Not only that, the transportation of newly manufactured parts to different locations also contributes to carbon emissions. So, as you can gather, the entire lifecycle of new car parts has a substantial environmental impact.

When you purchase green parts, however, it’s guaranteed that you’re contributing to a greener future. Whenever a green part is purchased, the lifespan of the part is extended and is prevented from ending up in landfill.

Recycled parts means there is a reduced demand for new part production, which in turn helps conserve valuable resources like metal, plastic, and energy. Recycling car parts also minimises waste, reduces landfill space, and decreases the pollution associated with manufacturing new components. By opting for green parts, you’re actively participating in the circular economy and support the responsible use of resources.

At Overton Automotive, we recycle vehicles and sell green parts across the UK. We also collect cars from anywhere around the UK (and cover the costs), which helps to reduce carbon emissions caused by transportation. Make the world a greener place and recycle your car with us today.

Cost Effective

Did you know that purchasing green parts is significantly cheaper than buying brand new car parts?

By purchasing recycled parts, you can often find high-quality alternatives at a fraction of the cost of new parts. Find more info on our blog about how much money green parts can save you.

Whether you’re a car owner or a repair shop, opting for green parts allows you to make substantial savings while still ensuring the reliability and performance of your vehicle. If you’re looking for affordable car parts without compromising on quality, it’s definitely worth checking out green parts over new.

Car being handed over in exchange for money.

Availability & Quality

As car recycling has become increasingly popular in recent years, it’s resulted in a wide availability of green parts for various makes and models of vehicles.

Whether you need an engine, radio unit, body panel, or any other component, there’s a good chance that a recycled alternative is readily accessible. Check out our stock of 50,000+ parts on our ebay store.

You also don’t have to worry about the quality of green parts as all parts are carefully inspected, tested, and refurbished to ensure their compatibility and functionality, making them a reliable choice for vehicle repairs and maintenance.

All of Overton Automotive’s green parts are VRAC guaranteed with every purchase, meaning all parts we sell are fully checked, graded and certified.

Sustainability Awareness

When buying green car parts, you’re actively contributing to a more sustainable automotive industry.

Now more than ever, there’s a much larger message out there about car recycling. For example, Global Car Recycling Day was recently announced to encourage a more sustainable future. Days and events like this are a great way to spread awareness about the topic, particularly on social media, and encourage people from all over to get involved.

Whenever someone makes an environmentally conscious decision like car recycling and purchasing green parts, it ultimately reduces the environmental footprint associated with manufacturing new parts and encourages responsible consumption. It sends a powerful message to manufacturers and the industry as a whole, promoting the importance of sustainable practices and encouraging further innovation in the industry.

Choosing to recycle your car and purchasing green parts is a win-win situation. Not only do you contribute to an environmentally friendly future, but you can also benefit from significant cost savings and access to high-quality components. So, next time you need a car part, consider the benefits of buying green and join the movement towards a greener, more sustainable future through car recycling.

Global Car Recycling Day: Everything you need to know

In today’s world, where environmental consciousness is more important than ever, finding sustainable solutions has become a priority. When it comes to the automotive industry, car recycling and the use of green parts play a vital role in reducing waste and promoting eco-friendly practices.

Global Car Recycling Day

That’s why it’s important to acknowledge the announcement and new awareness day by the auto recycling experts, CarTakeBack. To encourage a sustainable future, the company announced the first annual Global Car Recycling Day which is to be held on June 20th.

Here’s what CarTakeBack’s Business Development Manager, Alison Price, has to say:

“Establishing responsible car recycling networks across the globe, after meeting the UK and EU’s tough environmental standards and 95% recycling rates, has revealed the pressing need for this campaign. While many countries love their cars, and are increasingly environmentally aware, at the end of a vehicle’s life the right choices are not always clear or indeed available.

To avoid environmental harm and to ensure the protection of sustainable car production into the future, it’s essential that car recycling regulations are improved internationally. The public can help to drive that progress by demanding an environmentally responsible route for the disposal of their old car.

We’re looking forward to raising awareness through Global Car Recycling Day and working with organisations and individuals worldwide to maximise its effect.”

The campaign will no doubt be supported by many in the automotive industry, and we are glad to encourage everyone to participate and spread the word. Mark your calendars for June 20th and use the hashtag #GlobalCarRecyclingDay to share your support and contribute.

Auto Recycling at Overton Automotive

Overton Automotive is on a mission to make a significant impact on waste reduction and carbon footprint by actively engaging in the recycling of end-of-life vehicles, hence our full support behind the campaign.

So, let’s delve into our recycling process.

When a vehicle arrives at our yards for recycling, we carefully dismantle and depollute all materials and liquids. Our skilled technicians remove all hazardous materials, such as fluids, batteries, and mercury switches, ensuring their safe disposal.

The car is then disassembled, with valuable components and parts being salvaged for reuse or refurbishment. Our store currently holds over 50,000 green parts.

We recycle 95% of the vehicle, with all remaining materials which cannot be sold as green parts (e.g. the shell, wiring etc) being taken to a recycling facility. These materials are then shredded, sorted, and processed to separate different materials, including steel, aluminium, and plastics.

At Overton Automotive, our recycling process guarantees the safe, responsible, and efficient recycling of your car, providing you with peace of mind in making an environmentally-conscious choice.

As we celebrate Global Car Recycling Day, it’s essential to recognise the impact that car recycling can have on the environment. By choosing to recycle your car, you actively contribute to conserving resources, reducing waste, and promoting a sustainable future.

So, make a difference today by embracing car recycling and spreading awareness about the importance of this global movement. Together, we can drive change and build a greener, more sustainable planet to live in.
